Dental appliances: when teeth line up

To have a resplendent smile is what many people dream about. To achieve this, one must pass into the hands of orthodontic specialists on Berkeley Clinic. How do they correct the position of the teeth? The answers are in this folder on dental appliances.

Alignment. Theoretically, our teeth are aligned in a horseshoe-shaped curve. But it happens that some teeth go forward, backward or crooked.

The causes. The causes of a bad positioning of the teeth can be multiple. Sometimes it is hereditary: one has, for example, the chin behind one of his parents. In other cases, it can come from bad habits, like sucking on your thumb or pushing your teeth with your tongue when you swallow…

Dental apparatus. The solution to reposition the teeth correctly is then the dental appliance. It will exert forces on the teeth to make them move, thanks to a resorption and a progressive reconstruction of the alveolar bone which surrounds the roots.

There are different types of equipment . The fixed metal fixture, glued to teens’ teeth, is the best known but there are many others. Some designed to intercept a problem from 6 years, others to prolong in an adult the action of a treatment performed in adolescence…

Price . From one practitioner to another, the cost of a treatment can change. In a big city, it is on average around 600 or 900 Euros per semester.

Social Security may reimburse some of these treatments, but only by prior arrangement. In addition, this negotiation must be concluded before the patient’s 16 years of age.

Social Security reimburses 193 Euros per semester, three times less than the price of treatment … This scale has not changed in nineteen years.

For adults. Orthodontics is only supported if it is accompanied by surgery.

Discreet device. Some people do not hesitate to spend a fortune to have the smile of their dreams. For them, what counts above all is that the devices are discreet. In these cases, they can resort to a particular technique, developed in the 60s, in Hollywood: lingual orthodontics, which consists of placing the device behind the teeth, instead of front. This is a complex technique because the back surface of the teeth is very irregular. Therefore, the treatment is two to three times more expensive than a conventional device.

Lingual orthodontics is not an innocuous technique: the treatment is heavier than in the case of conventional equipment because it can cause lesions of the tongue. On the other hand, the technique of setting up is more delicate, the time spent at the orthodontist is much longer.
