The Botox injection is one of the most popular solutions to reduce wrinkles and find a younger face.
Botox injection, what is it?
Botulinum toxin, more commonly known as Botox, entered the world of Medicina Estetica Roma in the 1980s. This product, secreted by bacteria, blocks the diffusion of acetylcholine which causes contraction of muscles. When the muscles contract, wrinkles of expression in the face are formed, especially in the forehead, eyes (wrinkles of the Lion) and the outer corner of the eyes (crow’s feet).
These facial wrinkles are formed because of an imbalance between the elevating and lowering muscles of the eyebrow. The lifting muscle is responsible for the frontal folds while the descending muscle causes the appearance of crow’s feet and Lion’s wrinkles. An injection of Botox can soften one of these two muscles that no longer contracts. It gives volume to the muscle and then freeze. As a result, the process of occurrence of frontal skin wrinkles is interrupted.
Botox can be used for other parts of the face, to treat the wrinkles of the lower eyelids, the muscular strings that stretch at the neck or the folds of the upper lip. However, intervention in these areas is riskier. Whatever the area to be treated, it is highly recommended to contact only a cosmetic doctor.
Botox and hyaluronic acid have different but complementary actions. Botulinum toxin helps to tighten the skin avoiding the contraction of muscles. Hyaluronic acid, on the other hand, helps to fill wrinkles. A combined action of these two products makes it possible to treat the entire face.
Advantages, disadvantages and contraindications of a Botox injection
Botox injections are an interesting alternative to heavy surgery operations. In terms of costs and pre-requisites, the difference is substantial. In addition, the intervention is fast and you can resume your usual activities immediately. Another advantage is that the injection usually does not cause any allergic reaction. The results can be evaluated after a few days and for an average duration of six to eight months.
The only known disadvantage is a poor administration of the product. This is why it is important to only use the services of an experienced and meticulous practitioner.
Botox injection is contraindicated in the following cases:
- pregnant or breastfeeding women
- people taking antibiotics, anticoagulants or anti-inflammatories
- in case of known hypersensitivity to Botox
- to people with myasthenia gravis
- to people with Lambert-Eaton Syndrome.
Procedure and price of a Botox treatment
A first consultation with the practitioner is necessary before an injection of Botox. The doctor then informs the patient of the product, indications, contraindications and the results, advantages and disadvantages of the operation. At the end of this first session, the patient signs a document certifying that he has received all this information and makes an informed decision. Depending on his choice, the patient may or may not agree a time of reflection.
The next session begins with a muscle diagnosis that allows the practitioner to assess the correct dosage and determine where the injections will be made. It then performs microinjections of the product.
The last session, which is held on average between 15 and 21 days after the injection, allows the doctor to check with his patient and correct any residual asymmetries.
Results of a Botox injection
Depending on the concentration of Botox administered, the effects of the injection are visible after 3 to 7 days. During this period, botulinum toxin will act on areas where it is desired to avoid muscle relaxation. The marks of aging disappear, the skin becomes smoother, younger and visibly relaxed.
After a first injection, the results may not be perfect, but the administration may be repeated after six months. It is inadvisable to perform the injections at too close intervals at the risk of seeing antibodies that act against the product. The effectiveness of the treatment can be affected.
However, if we note an asymmetry, it is always possible to perform a complementary injection in 15 days after the first injection.
