In a typical 21st century office, much of the work is done sitting on an office chair (usually in front of a computer).

Do you know that sitting poses stress more on your spine than standing? To avoid lower back problems, it is crucial to use a spa pedicure chair. What is ergonomics? It is the applied science of material design (for the workplace) aimed at maximizing productivity by reducing work fatigue and discomfort. An ergonomic chair, for example, is a chair that supports your lower back and helps you maintain good posture.  The big question is:  how to find the best ergonomic office chair?

All ergonomic chairs are not designed the same way. Since each person’s physique is different, the ideal is to look for a chair whose height, backrest angle and height of armrest can easily be adjusted. There are several types of office chairs and there are no perfect ones. However, a few simple tips on choosing a chair can help you avoid the biggest mistakes most people make and save a lot of discomfort in your joints. If in doubt, discuss it with your physiotherapist. It can help you find the chair that best suits your needs.

Five key factors to consider when choosing an ergonomic chair:

  • The height of the seat. The height should be adjustable. Depending on your size, the seat should be at a distance of about 40 to 55 cm from the floor. When sitting, the bottom of your feet should be against the floor and your thighs should be horizontal, parallel to the floor.
  • The width and depth of the seat.  The standard width of a seat plays between 43 and 50 cm. The depth (from the front to the back of the seat) should be sufficient to allow you to sit against the back of the chair with a 5 to 10 cm gap between the back of your knees and the seat of the chair. You must be able to adjust the tilt forward or backward because a good tilt can significantly reduce the strain on your lower back.
  • The folder. The ideal back should have a width of 30 to 48 cm and be able to support the natural curve of the spine. The more we spend time sitting, the more we are inclined not to hold ourselves upright. Thus, lumbar support of the back of the chair is very important to help support your spine.
  • The armrests. The armrests of the office chairs should be adjustable. You should be able to rest your arms comfortably, your shoulders relaxed. Your elbows and forearms should be placed lightly, that is, the armrests should be neither too high nor too low. •
  • Swivel base. This allows you to rotate easily to access various areas of your office without stressing your spine.

Choosing the right office chair can help you avoid the agony of lower back or neck pain associated with full-time office jobs. Too much time spent on the computer or several hours a day on the phone can also put your spine at risk.
